Acupuncture – branch of Traditional Chinese medicine

Consists of inserting needles into specific points of the body. These points when stimulated can produce changes in the body’s internal organs and function.

Theory behind acupuncture

Disease, in Chinese medical philosophy, is the result of an imbalance of energy (or Chi) in the body – excess, deficiency or blockage. Acupuncture has the ability to unblock congested Chi, to strengthen or to weaken Chi, and to calm overactive Chi.

Chi circulates along channels called meridians which link acupuncture points – these points are places on the skin that are especially sensitive to the body’s bioelectricity, and conduct impulses readily.

Western theories:

  • Increase blood circulation to the area

  • Stimulate Nerves

  • Release hormones (such as cortisol and endorphins [a pain control chemical])

  • Relieve muscle spasms

Methods to stimulate acupuncture points include:

Solid needles, Hypodermic needles, electricity, heat (moxa), low level laser therapy, Massage, Implants (gold beads) & Magnets.

Indications for acupuncture

  • Musculoskeletal problems – arthritis, disc

  • Skin problems – lick granulomas

  • Gastrointestinal – vomiting & diarrhea

  • Neurological – epilepsy, nerve paralysis

  • Immune and allergic disorders

  • Emergencies – cardiac & respiratory arrest

  • Pain
